tyTwo acts from Brighton label Tru Thoughts playing here tonight, good to see them back so soon after their recent visit. First up is Ty, who does a good job of getting people to the front and keeping us involved by helping him with choruses on his songs and by following his dance moves – a kind of Hip Hop Mr. Motivator only cooler, funnier and funkier. He’s ably backed by DJ Billy Bizznizz, original DJ in the London Posse, and bona fide old school UK Hip Hop legend. Ty recently released two EPs “A kick, a snare and an idea”, parts one and two, and it’s these that form the basis of his set tonight. Funky, danceable and presented with humour and showmanship, Ty knows how to rock a crowd. A great set from a UK Hip Hop veteran.

hot 8Brighton is a fixture on the Hot 8 tour schedule, and these dudes from New Orleans always get a big welcome here. We’ve reviewed them before as they also played Brighton in March, so I only need to say that they’re always worth going to see for some life affirming, funky, down home New Orleans joie de vivre delivered by a crowd pleasing bunch of great musicians. The Hot 8 comprises two trumpets, two trombones, a drum kit split into two, one sax and one mighty sousaphone.

They give us a great rendition of their version of “Ghost Town” and end with the eternal favourite “Sexual Healing”. Go see them if you get the chance.

Peace.
