A welcome return for the New Orleans based band who are signed to the Brighton label Tru Thoughts. They always get a good crowd when they play here, and there’s a great atmosphere from the off. If you’ve seen any episodes of the HBO drama Treme then you’ll know what to expect. Lots of drumming and brass along with chanted vocals and cover versions of well known songs.

Back home, they’re known for playing in Second Lines during the day (the additional part of the parade) then gigging in clubs in the evening, so these must be relatively easy gigs for them. It’s good natured, great fun and brilliant to dance to. The biggest cheer of the evening is still reserved for their most well known tune, their cover version of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual healing”, but the whole set goes down well.

They mention that there’s a new album out in the Autumn, so I guess there will be more live dates in the UK when that comes out. A great taster of a brilliant new Orleans tradition, the Hot 8 Brass Band are true party starters.
