Rewind have been putting on hip hop events in Brighton for a little while now and place a firm emphasis on the old school hip hop tenets of “peace, love, unity and having fun”. The event is hosted and emceed (in the original sense of the word) by long-standing Brighton MC Joncept (a unique voice coupled with a unique delivery, definitely one of my favourite Brighton MCs). With Fidel Cutstro on the decks we hear classics like Kool G Rap’s “It’s a demo” and “Nitty gritty” by KMD and Brand Nubian so we’re perfectly warmed up for the iminent JBs appearance.

The come bounding onto the stage along with original DJ Sammy B and launch straight into an old school hip hop party throwdown. Classics like “Because I got it like that”, “I’ll House you” and “Jim Browski” are perfect for keeping the dancefloor moving and what I like about the crowd is that it’s not just made up of old school hip hop heads (although there are plenty in the house tonight) but there’s a good cross section of Brighton’s young clubbing crowd including a couple of dudes in full blue Smurf regalia.

As well as plenty of their old tunes, Mike Gee and Afrika Baby Bam have plenty of short freestyles and call and response routines at the ready to keep people hyped up. It’s a good, rowdy set played to a house full of up for it party people. Hip hop how it should be.
