Joseph Sadler aka Grandmaster Flash has been coming to the UK for over 20 years now and I’ve been going to see him play for as long as he’s been coming over. A man who understands how to read and rock a crowd using nothing but vinyl and imagination, a Grandmaster Flash set is always going to be party central.

He was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and really desn’t have much left to proove in terms of the art of the DJ, I just go and see him play ‘cos it’s good fun. Whether he’s playing records by Blondie, Nirvana and The White Stripes or George Clnton, Zapp and James Brown, he has the knack of dropping the right tune at the right points in his set.

As a nod to changing technology, he has been endorsing and using the Traktor Scratch software for a while now, making redundant this lame argument that “real” DJs only use vinyl. Surely the man who invented the Quick Mix Theory and was rocking parties before most of us had even heard of hip hop is a real DJ? Case closed.

He engages with the crowd throughout his set, easily playing records and using the microphone without missing a beat. Not much more to add really, top tunes played by a dude who knows how to rock a party. Sorts me out every time.
