A welcome return for Brighton’s own funkateers and as expected this set is fast, fun, furious, full on and other words beginning with f.

Not much more to say really, if you’re into deep funk, heavy soul, and a good time at a gig then this is the band for you. Dionne Charles’ voice ranges from sassy to sultry to Gospel shouter (sometimes in the space of one song) and is what gives this band the edge over other funk outfits.

The lady I took with me hadn’t heard of them before and absolutely loved it, so that’s always a good sign of a decent band. They just know how to do it live and are definitely worth checking out. I thought they were due a second album soon but their web site only has their debut album on sale as well as some early singles. Still, they seem to be playing a lot of gigs and are still championed by Craig Charles via his Funk and Soul show on BBC 6 Music http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0072ky7.

(Note – About four weeks after this gig Baby Charles split up :-(. As they’re all pretty good musicians I’m sure they’ll still be making music and Dionne Charles already provides vocals for Craig Charles’ Fantasy Funk band. Still a shame though.)

Nice little vid of them here with music and interviews, all in a little telly 🙂
